A quick look back at 2006

Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at 12:16 am

Since these days nobody is reading blogs because they’re in their families, or somewhere else than in front of their computer, I thought it was appropriate to write a boring article now about my blog’s statistics and to take this opportunity to thank people who helped making it successful.

First, here’s the summary of the year 2006

Unique visitors: 166, 275
Visits: 252, 581
Bandwidth usage: 71.06 Gbytes (!!!)

Since this blog is online, 650 articles have been published and 1590 comments have been received. By the way, Akismet successfully blocked more than 27, 000 spam comments. Really impressive.

I went back and read what I was saying about this blog at the end of the year 2005, back when I had only been blogging for 6 months, and we can see the evolution of the figures.
In retrospect, I posted 195 articles (including this one) and bloggers commented on them 221 times. From the few tens of people that came visiting BREM experience in July 2005, the community has grown to more than 3400 different visitors per month from 45 different countries in December, an average of 140 per day. That’s awesome.
- blog entry for happy year 2006
As of December 31 2006, I had about 1000 visitors a day, thus about 18, 000 unique visiitors monthly.

That’s an improvement by almost a factor 7!

To further illustrate the progression, I prepared a graph. The data covers the whole life of this blog, from mid-2005 to better show the evolution.

blog traffic 2005-2006
Blog traffic 2005-2006
On the chart, to the right (click on the image to see it bigger), we can see the rather linear progression during the year 2005 up until about the mid-2006, then a huge peak at more than 37, 500 unique visitors in September.

That’s because I then got arpined. The arpinage is when a blogger with a blog with a lot more traffic than yours places a link on his blog, thus creating a wave of new visitors that will submerge the server of the less popular blogger. Oh, and that blogger’s name must be Dominic Arpin.

Indeed, it’s around September 11 that an exclusive video about the destruction of the World Trade Center towers was placed on the Internet. I was one of the first to find it, and Dominic Arpin placed a link to it on his blog. The overload made my Web server go blank, but after a few adjustments, it went back to normal.

Weird coincidence, the day after, Kimveer Gill took his own life after murdering Anastasia De Sousa. I had learned about the Dawson College shooting on Dominic Arpin’s blog, but as it often is when such an event occurs, the information is slow paced. I had then taken upon myself to gather many information elements , like videos, images, radio interviews, articles about the topic in an article on my blog. Since I was getting a traffic boost from my arpinage, this article was very successful. This event had then shaken the Quebec population. I had thus written [one], [two], [three] articles on the topic.

To stay in the bad news of the year, I had to say goodbye to my two beloved bunny rabbits, Marvin and Bowser, who both passed away in less than a month interval. They were my first pets and I was really saddened by their passing. I did not talk a lot about rabbits recently, but I have a few surprises up my sleeve for 2007.

Now, I just have to use the acquired experience from 2006 to do better in 2007. About that, I guess I should have a goal to reach. Using the above data, I thus will have a goal of 5, 000 unique visitors per day in January 2008, which translates to about 100, 000 unique visitors monthly. Quite the contract! Realistic? Probably not! :) .

To (try) to reach this goal, I will keep on providing quality content (ahem), my political opinions, funny videos, comments about current events, the geekitude, blogs, movies, tv series. Oh, and next summer, we will for sure have to do landscaping work, so be prepared for landscaping picture and tips for the house!

I would also like to make more short videos. Reveal my personality a little bit more.

So to all those who come read me regularly, those who link to my blog, I say a big thank you! Your names are for sure on my blog list, on the right.

Happy 2007 again!

Back Online

Sunday, December 17, 2006 at 12:10 am

Did you miss this blog?

Well, at least 2-3 people mentionned it to me, so I’ll extrapolate that you did. But even if you didn’t, well, it’s back online.

Apparently, our internet connection carrier was having fiber optics issues.

So now, I guess I have to publish something cool, eh?

Sampled Year In Review

Friday, December 15, 2006 at 10:03 pm

Year 2006 in review using the first sentence of each post published on the blog this year. Idea borrowed from Raymi the minx.

January
May this new year bring health and prosperity to you all.

February
I’m stealing this story from LVSPC. I steal but I’m honest.

March
Gog drew a couple of bunny related pictures, including one of your devoted host (that would be me, brem) in a bunny suit. I am really not afraid of being ridiculed.

April
You were craving weird?

May
Comedians often take aims at the president, especially the current one, in speaking the truth, and finding a funny edge to it.

June
I had the misfortune to travel to Las Vegas for work a few years ago.

July
Happy Canada Day! So what?

August
For this first time this year (and ever…), we took our little critters outside on our freshly built (almost) patio deck to get some sun and fill their lungs with fresh air.

September
Goüry Glogenflobish, a sensitive artist who will help you discover the daily lives of the people from the eastern block.

October
Now matter how many times the cats on the left practiced his wax on, wax off from Mr. Miyagi’s advice, I’m afraid the right cat had the edge. I sometimes have a very vivid imagination.

November
Scrat, the prehistoric squirrel from the computer animated movie Ice Age (I & II) is featured in this short film.

December
Michel Leblanc and Houssein put up their blog traffic statistics on-line. Am I obsessed with statistics? Nah.

100 bloggers linked me!

Friday, December 1, 2006 at 5:23 pm

technorati 100 blogs linkback100 bloggers linked me!

According to Technorati.

Indeed with a link from magazine P45 and one from Rabbit Bites that were added today, I reached this mythical number.

What does it do? What does it changes?

Stricly nothing, but while I’m stroking my ego today, I thought I might as well do it all the way and do it well!

Thanks to everybody for referring my blog, keep it going!
